Summary

Sor Se Khmer is a mobile application that supports students to learn how to write in a more entertaining way. The app is built in response to the fact that Cambodian children are struggling to write and indicate their native language, Khmer, with 50% of Cambodian children demonstrate an inability to write sentences, as shown in  an assessment conducted by Education Quality Assurance Department (EQAD) of the MOEYS in December 2015. The same report also states that students specifically in third grade have a limited vocabulary, and their dictation scores on average score a dismal 41% correct. Moreover, with further assessment, EQAD indicates that teachers at schools have limited resources to increase students’ vocabulary proficiency. The application is the outcome of iCamp on Education which took place on August 2017. The application targeted students from grade 1 to grade 4 to learn how to write Khmer. The application consists of functions such as – write according to trace, write according to sound and write based on pictures. Sor Se Khmer is available to download on Android devices and are currently used in school among New Generation School in Kampong Cham province.
