Information about the ICT Education Program

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), from computer to phone, has penetrated both our personal and professional lives and keeps progressing at high speed, turning Cambodia into a knowledge-based economy. The education system cannot afford to stay behind, otherwise it risks giving its student’s skills that are obsolete in today’s  society.

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), in response to this technological growth in the economic and society, has developed its Information and Communication Technology Education plan and has integrated it into a national curriculum for students from grade 4 to grade 12.

In order to help students have a deep understand about ICT, InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia in partnership with MoEYS and KAPE have already piloted a Computer Programming program for students from grade 7 to grade 11 at New Generation School(NGS).

Computer Programming Project’s timeline

With support from SPIDER, the Computer Programming program has been introduced to IT teachers and students at NGS schools.

During a one year pilot program from July 2018 to October 2019, the program’s goal is to strengthen MoEYS teacher capacity to help students grow their interest in ICT and to teach them computer programing as well as practicing on real programmable robot kits.

After several discussions with MoEYS and KAPE, the pilot will be realized in 4 New Generation School(NGS) that are equipped with a computer lab.

Curriculum Development

InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia discussed with IT education experts, both from public and private schools in Cambodia, to learn from their experiences on how they teach programing courses to young students. The team had been doing a lot of research on programming training materials, which fit with a reasonable timeframe that matches a one year curriculum.

After two months of discussing and researching, we successfully developed the Computer Programming curriculum (follow code.org) which had been reviewed by MoEYS, IT Department team and our partner KAPE. A teacher guide, lesson plans, and teaching materials have been documented for teachers and students.

The curriculum was developed into two parts which is an add-on to the lessons of the national curriculum. For student from grade 7 to grade 8, limited knowledge of language (English) and computer, will learn about basic coding-Graph Paper Programming and Web Development (Web Content and HTML and Styling and CSS). These coding lessons will help students to develop simple mobile application, basic websites, develop basic games, and have a chance to practice with robots.

The second part of the curriculum is for students from grade 9 to 11 who have a basic knowledge about computer science. This group of students will learn about problem solving,  animation, coding games, Event-Driven Programming, Programming with Data Structures, User Centered Design, and Mobile Application Prototyping.

Training the Trainers (ToT)

To ensure that IT teacher provide a quality of education on Computer Programming to students, InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia and KAPE are working to conduct Training to Trainers (ToT) with NGS IT teachers.

All IT teachers from Kampong Cham High School, Sisowath high school, Prek Anhjanh High School and Prek Leap High School, KAPE staff and Official staff from IT Department of MoEYS joined the training. The Tools and the concepts of each lesson were introduced to trainees.

Pilot program with NGS students

The computer programming course will be introduced to students in the new school year. Ten IT teachers and 2431 students from four NGS schools -Sisowath, Prek Leap, Prek Anhjanh and Kampong Cham high schools– will be trained in computer programming. Sisowath high school starts first (October 1, 2018) while the other three high schools start in mid-October.
